A REAL-TIME DEMONSTRATION OF SCALING DRUPAL 7

We will demonstrate the scalability of Drupal 7 in a complex, dynamic, cloud-based environment. The setup is this:

A prominent human rights organization has published a story exposing a shocking human rights violation in a volatile part of the world. Traffic to the website spikes dramatically, and the single server running Drupal 7 starts to show signs of weakness. It is critical that the website not crash. What happens next?

See automated configuration management and deployment in action. We will incrementally send more traffic to the website, starting at 10Mbps and increasing past 1Gbps. Watch as we respond to critical events in real-time, in six key stages:

  • CDN is enabled and configured for static content
Varnish and memcache are setup and configured on the web server
  • The Drupal database is dynamically moved from the web server to a separate, dedicated database server
  • A load balancer is added and configured
  • Additional web servers are created as-needed and configured with the latest code
  • A second, physical database server is added and configured as a slave

The result? The site is able to deliver over 1Gbps of traffic.

Attendees of this session will be able to verify the site stays up during this demonstration.
